BandDawn has been playing music since the age of three and with her brother Ron, was one of the founder members of sixties band Third Eye at 9 years of age. She studied classical piano under the renowned pianist Moira Birks and then embarked on a professional career playing countrywide with bands such as Halloween, Leprechaun and Cedric Samson’s Boogie Band. Included in her performances, she has backed cabaret artistes including Paul Andrews, Cy Sacks, Eddie Eckstein and Dianne Chandler. Whilst in Johannesburg she gained great experience working in the top recording studios with artistes including Malie Kelly, Bobby Louw, Joe Arthur and the Stockley sisters.
Dawn has now formed a permanent ‘core’ band called ‘The Reals’ consisting of top South African musicians including: Barry Thomson (Guitar/Vocals), Mali Sewell (Drums/Vocals) and Jason Andrew (bass & vocals) During 2006 & 2007, the band completed ‘California Dreaming’, ‘Bookclub’ , ‘King & Queen’ and the second and third sell-out run of ‘Taste of Thomson’, at the Heritage Theatre, Hillcrest.
In between playing for the supper-theatre productions, the band plays for high profile corporate functions where brass, string players and top front-line vocalists are added to the line-up when requested.
Due to a new interest in psychedelic music of the 60’s, a few Third Eye tracks have been recently re-released on a local CD called ‘Astral Daze’ which is a compilation of South African Music of the 60’s. The band has planned revival concerts which will include some of their hit songs.
